Employment trends, tenure security and livelihoods for farmworkers on land redistribution farms
Presenter: Nkanyiso Gumede
PLAAS, University of the Western Cape
South Africa’s land reform has failed to meet official targets and the public’s expectations. It has its winners and losers, but where do workers stand in all this? South Africa’s land policy identifies farm workers as a category that should also benefit under the land reform programme. The country’s National Development Plan also argues that land reform should contribute towards job creation and improved livelihoods for farm workers. This seminar will show the outcomes for employment, livelihoods and land tenure rights for farm labourers — based on the land redistributed through the Pro-Active Land Acquisition Strategy (PLAS). The seminar looks at fieldwork findings featured in the ‘Elite Capture in Land Redistribution in South Africa’ report published by the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS).
