The Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) bids farewell to its outgoing director, Professor Andries du Toit.

Professor du Toit will continue his work at the University of the Western Cape at the School of Government, where he will contribute to teaching, research, and community engagement, specifically in the areas of poverty, citizenship, and democracy.

Professor du Toit has been a researcher at PLAAS since its inception 29 years ago. He has been a steady hand as the Institute’s director, taking up the reins from founding director Professor Ben Cousins in 2010.

PLAAS thanks Professor du Toit for his contributions during his long tenure and wishes him well in his new position.

Professor du Toit will move to the School from 01 May 2024.

Professor Ruth Hall is stepping in as acting director from 01 May to 31 December 2024. During the second semester, the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences will begin the recruitment process to appoint a new Director.
